It is very important for any client or consumer to know about the training and experiences that their licensed provider brings to the work that is done. 


Tom Johnson began his graduate education as a US Public Heath Fellow in medical sociology and social psychiatry at Brown University. After leaving Brown he went on for additional graduate education and received his masters degree from  Harvard University, his doctors degree in counseling psychology from the University of California Berkeley and completed his internship at Duke University. He is a licensed psychologist in Maine, a registered health service provider by the National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology, Diplomate in Marital and Family Therapy by the American Board of Family Psychology, and nationally certified school psychologist. 


Dr. Johnson has published over forty-five reviews, articles and book chapters. Some of the publishers include Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine, Ethical Human Psychology and Psychiatry, the International Universities Press, the American Psychological Association, the National Association of School Psychologists, and the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. He has served as an adjunct professor and has taught over forty courses at Rutgers, Bates and the University of Southern Maine. He is the founder of the Maine Division of the American Association for Marriage and Family therapy.


Tom Cushman has been with JA since 1985 and recently retired from active practice. He provides consultation and peer review to Dr. Johnson. He received his master’s degree from the SUNY and his Ph.D. from Syracuse University. He has served as a professor and chairperson of the Department of Counseling and Psychological Services for the State University of New York at Oswego.  Both Drs. Johnson and Cushman have served as Contributing Editors for the National Association of School Psychologists’ Communiqué.



Our receptionist and office manager Mary Beth Johnson is a graduate of the U. of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and she received her Master of Arts in Teaching degree from UNC. She recently retired from the Auburn School System where she worked for over 25 years as a teacher. She has taught at the elementary, middle school and high school level.
